WW: Tantrums Are Exhausting

tantrums

I took Chantal for a half hour walk and left Buggy with daddy. She pulled a nutty when I left and eventually passed out on the floor and this is how I found her when I got back. She did get tons of kisses from Chantal when we came in and was very happy to see her mama-lol!

Happy Birthday To Me

80483d5c373711e2859c22000a9f0a20_7Today is my birthday. It feels just like any other day. I don’t really keep track of how old I am and most of the time I really have to think hard when I’m asked my age. I am in my early forty’s but I don’t like to be defined by a number because I feel like I’m in my early 30’s. Although this past month has been tough and exhausting. Lately I’ve been zonked out by 9:30P and my blog has taken quite a hit. I’m a night owl and generally go to bed around midnight or 1AM. Hopefully I can get back to my regular schedule once the holiday crazies are over. With Thanksgiving and my birthday done, I still have Buggy’s birthday and Christmas in the same week.

Back to my birthday. Yesterday after I came in from walking Chantal I hade this beautiful cake waiting for me. The girls –Buggy and “Baby” our 6 year old neighbor and the husband sang happy birthday when I walked in the door. It was so cute. Buggy presented me with a nice gift – a brand new laptop. I was so happy especially since mine has been totally crappy out on me.

My husband flew out this morning so it was really a quite and special day with my girls –Buggy and my fur babies.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

Stoneyfield Yogurt Taste Test

20121115_133307Recently I received an invitation for a taste test at Stoneyfield Farms. We love Stoneyfield yogurt in our house. It’s the only yogurt my daughter will eat.

I didn’t realize Stoneyfield Farms had a Visitor’s Center about a half hour from my house where you can sample yummy yogurt and buy it at discount prices. On Tuesdays they have story time where you can hear about their early days on the farm and check out their kids stuff, eco-goodies and kitchen helpers.

I tested a few different vanilla flavors and you can certainly tell the difference. I’ve never been to a taste test before. I also tried the Strawberry Greek Yogurt. I really liked it. Greek yogurt is a bit heavier than the regular one. It has a lot of protein and it’s quite filling. The first few bites were a bit tarty but if you can get past that it’s really good. I was there for about a half hour and received a few free samples for my time and I also stocked up on some more yogurt for Buggy. My daughter eats 2-3 containers a day.

If you are a fan of Stoneyfield’s make sure you check out their website at stoneyfield.com for coupons and sign up for their rewards program. You can find the codes on one of the yogurt lids.

Are you a fan of Stoneyfield Organic Yogurt?

The Battle: Mami vs. Fleas

20121110_184456If you’d had the pleasure of being owned by pets you must know how lucky you are. They provide unconditional love, a shoulder to cry on, a laugh when you need it and a lick to just say I love you. Having a pet is super awesome. The down side of pets is the beastly “friends” they can bring home. The last few weeks have been exhausting. Apparently we have fleas and it’s been going on for a few months. My dogs have not been scratching or itching but Allie started licking EVERYTHING – the rug, the hardwood floor, the bed, comforter, you name it she licked it.

I’m pretty good at putting the flea meds on my dogs but I don’t remember the September treatment. I have never seen the little buggers and my dogs have not been scratching but every time we are at the vets office they find them on my dogs. I kept blaming them saying the fleas were in the office and jumping ON my dogs. Well two weeks ago I brought my boxer in for her rabies and sure as shit they saw one on her. When I got home I checked her and didn’t see any but I put her in the tub anyway and guess what – I saw the little buggers! They weren’t hanging around the top and her back they were around her legs and underneath. I grabbed my DAWN detergent and lathered her up real good – or so I thought. When I checked on Allie my westie, I saw all the flea dander on her. Do you know what flea dander is – it’s flea SHIT! It looks like pepper.

Both dogs got their bath and I washed all the bedding in HOT water. The next day I checked the girls again. I was getting ready to put Buggy down for the night and when I checked Allie I found more fleas. I pulled a fricken nutty! I grabbed my phone and went online. I found a site that said to use water, alcohol and dawn in a spray bottle and to spray your dog. I went nuts. Poor Allie was trying to get away from me so fast. I was on a mission to get those MOFO’s! Those little f*uckers know how to hide and one of them actually bit me. I’m spraying my dogs like they are on fire. I’m bathing them every.single.day! I’m washing their comforters every.single.day! I’m vacuuming my bedroom and spraying my rug with alcohol every.single.day. It fricken sucks! I feel dirty. My house isn’t dirty. I’m not dirty, I shower twice a day and now I want to shower five times a day. I’m always itchy. Any spec of black I see I think is flea shit. I’m exhausted but I’m not done yet.  When I check Allie I look for any black specks.

Yesterday I bought some new flea medicine for the girls. It was Sentry Pro XFT. Do NOT buy this product. Not long after I put it on Allie she started having an allergic reaction. The poor dog was freaking out – restless, panting, trying to scratch and even had a few accidents. I threw her in the sink and gave her a bath with Dawn and made sure I lathered her up really good and scrubbed the poison off. I did it twice. After four hours my little girl was finally able to rest but she was still breathing pretty heavy. Allie is 14.5. I was up throughout the night making sure she was still breathing. This morning my boxer Chantal started freaking out. She was running around the house acting like she had to poo and had a weak back end. I threw her in the tub –twice and massaged her back end. Six hours later she was feeling better. I didn’t have any Benadryl on hand to give them. I went online and read how so many other dogs have reacted the same way to this flea medication. I can’t believe they are still selling it. I went back to Petsmart and returned the toxic shit that was killing my dogs.

From now on it’s all natural stuff. This is the second time Chantal has had a reaction from flea meds and I’m not risking it again. I don’t even want to use Frontline or Advantix which is what I’ve used before.  My girls are doing better and Allie has pretty much stopped licking everything.

Have any of your dogs experienced an allergic reaction to flea meds?

My Toddler Loves Her Coffee

IMG_9071Mama, I want CAKKEEEEEE.

As she looks up at me with a big smile on her face and repeats her request while I’m drinking my morning coffee. Mama, I want cakkeee. I tell her she can’t have coffee and offer her water or juice but since she’s a toddler turning 3 next month, no is not an acceptable answer so I pour her a small cup in her Dora tea cup. She knows she’s getting a cup. Weekend mornings are our coffee times.  It all started with her sneaking sips when we would leave our cups on the coffee table and she was hooked. I’ve tried adding milk and a bit of coffee but she knows the difference. I’ll add extra cream and little coffee with no sugar and she drinks it with a big smile. I’ve tried giving her flavored coffee in hopes that she will turn it away but instead she says “mmm, cakkee”.

She had stopped her coffee fix for a bit but started again recently. Drinking coffee doesn’t make her any more hyper than any other active toddler. In fact, she’s like me and can drink her cup or two of coffee and still take a nap. I will sometimes have a cup in the afternoon to wake up but instead it makes me tired.

I’ve talked to our pediatrician about it and he said there is no concern with having a cup here and there. Moderation is key so what the heck.

Anyone want some cakkee?

Backing Up Your Cell Phone Pictures

20121106_230433Like the majority of the population, my cell phone is my life line. I use it as a camera to take pictures and videos, check emails and update my contacts regularly because I don’t know anyone’s phone number by heart anymore. But what would you do if you lost your phone with all your precious pictures and videos especially the ones of your kids?

Saturday night Buggy was getting ready for her tubby. While she was picking out toys to put in the tub I went to give Allie her insulin. I wasn’t gone very long. When I came back I saw that she put a good amount of toys in the tub and was ready to get undressed. When I took a closer look to see what toys were in there I noticed my cell phone at the bottom of the tub. Not knowing how long it’s been in the water I quickly reached in and ran back down to the kitchen, took my phone apart, grabbed my rice and dumped my phone in and made sure it was fully covered.

When I’m home I check my phone here and there throughout the day but knowing that you don’t have a phone makes you a bit restless and makes you want to check it even more. Sunday morning I checked on my phone and said a little prayer that it would work. I mean everyone says that putting it in rice works so let’s see. I think I probably should have left it in longer but my phone did work although a bit wonky. I did notice that I lost all my pictures that were stored on my SD Card. I thought because I don’t store them directly on my phone I was protected. My heart sank! I kept telling myself that I would upload all my pics and video but never did. By late afternoon Sunday my phone was officially dead. It was two years old and I was ready for an upgrade but I usually keep my phones until I absolutely have to upgrade or it totally craps out on me. I guess Buggy made that decision for me.

All I can say is that I’m so glad that I recently signed up for a Dropbox account. Dropbox.com is cloud storage. It’s a free service that lets you bring your photos, docs, and videos anywhere and share them easily. It’s set up on my phone to upload all my pictures and videos automatically. I haven’t seen any updates from my phone so I wasn’t sure that it was doing it and when I checked my computer I saw all my pictures, videos and files. I was super excited. I also have Photobucket and had set it up to upload automatically as well and thought I had turned it off but I’m glad that I didn’t. So lesson learned! You back up your computer why not your cell phone. I really hate that you need to be so dependent on your stupid phone.

Do you back up your phone at all? If so, what do you use?

*disclosure: This is not a sponsored post for dropbox or photobucket. Just sharing my opinion on what I like and use

Dia De Los Muertos

dia de los muertosEl Dia De Los Muertos or Day of The Dead is a traditional Mexican holiday celebrated in Mexico and by the Hispanic community all over the world.  The holiday focuses on friends and family coming together sometimes in a cemetery to pray and remember friends and family members who have died. Celebrations start on November 1, All Saints Day, some may say it’s technically October 31 at midnight and November 2, All Souls Day.

The belief is that people go to the cemeteries to be with the souls of the departed and build private altars including favorite foods and beverages, photos or special mementos of the departed. The intent is to encourage visits by the souls, so the souls will hear the prayers and the comments of the living directed to them. Celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember funny events and stories about their loved ones. Think of it as a celebration for the departed members to celebrate their life and not to mourn them. I do this every year in a different way here because my parents and other family members are buried in Puerto Rico. Celebrating our departed is a great way to keep them close to us.

IMG_9513A common symbol of the holiday is the skull or calavera which the folks will represent by wearing masks-calacas and foods such as sugar or chocolate skulls, which are inscribed with the name of the recipient on the forehead.  If you were in Los Angeles attending the festivities you would have been able to taste NESTLÉ® ABUELITA® hot chocolate and NESCAFE® Cafe De Olla coffee.

IMG_9519With today being the last day to celebrate, I took Buggy and our neighbor “Baby” out Trick or Treating again to one of the towns that rescheduled due to the hurricane. It was a lot colder tonight than it was a few days ago and we were freezing when we got back home.  To get warmed up I made us some hot chocolate which the girls loved. It’s chocolate and cinnamon flavor was just what we needed to hit the spot.

If you’re not a fan of hot chocolate then you should taste the NESCAFE® Cafe De Olla coffee. It’s an instant coffee blended with cinnamon and a touch of sugar. I’m not really a fan of instant because there isn’t much flavor to it but this is really good and it is perfect for that afternoon coffee when you just want a cup and you don’t need to turn the coffee pot on.

Stop by NESTLÉ® ABUELITA® ‘s facebook page to view some Dia De Los Muertos celebration pictures and don’t forget Like them while you are there and you can also follow them on Pinterest.

Happy Halloween: My Butterfly Princess

IMG_9409Yesterday we had our first official Halloween. For Buggy’s first year we only went to our neighbor’s house and she cried at each one. Last year we never made it due to the storm so we were a bit nervous on how she would do this year. Buggy does not like to try on things so when she does you gotta grab hold of that moment and take advantage. Over the weekend we had gone to a friend’s party and Buggy was dressed as a pumpkin. I bought a pumpkin costume in hopes that if she sees Mami wearing one then she will wear hers too. It took some bribing but I finally got her to wear it. Tuesday when Buggy was at school her teacher told me that she actually approached her with one of the dress up costumes and wings. That was very surprising so when she said that she had a great time admiring herself I ran out that night in the pouring rain in search of a costume with wings and I found a Butterfly Princess that I absolutely love love love!

Buggy loves her costume too. Trick or treating was a big hit. She didn’t like it when they put the candy in her bucket though, she wanted to take it from them and she would put it in herself that way she didn’t have to get too close to them-hahahaha! When we got home instead of going in the house Buggy headed to our car and said “I wanna go bye-bye”. It was about 7:45 and I told her we were done but she was having such a great time that we jumped in the car and headed out again. It was pretty darn cold out there. We got a lot of candy. I have never given her candy but I’m pretty sure her dad has when he’s over at the old bag’s house although he denies it yet she knows all about chocolate and woke up this morning asking for candy. I had to empty her bucket and hide the candy before she got down stairs. The kid has her father’s sweet tooth for sure.

So I’m happy to say that we had such a great time. We are going out again tomorrow night to one of the towns that rescheduled trick or treating due to Hurricane Sandy not to get more candy but because she had so much fun and actually loved wearing her costume so why not do it again.

Check out my beautiful little butterfly princess.
