Could I Be Causing My Daughter’s UTI?

If you’ve had the miserable pleasure of having a urinary tract infections you know how painful it can be but did you also know that they can be pretty common in children when they are potty training. Unfortunately, we are on our second one. Watching Buggy go through this is heartbreaking especially when your child is begging you to help her.

Potty training your child isn’t easy and seriously, I will be happy to housebreak ten puppies than go through potty training again. Yesterday I was finally able to get a urine sample from Buggy and since we have done this before I pretty much knew that it was going to be positive. At the pediatrician’s office yesterday he asked if we were wiping from back to front and I said yes of course but there are times when she tries/wants to do it herself. As soon as I said yes of course we are wiping the right way, I did a “wait, what, back to front” and I had to do it in my head and then I got lost in my head going through the motions of wiping. I kinda zoned out the pediatrician and started to questioning myself – am I wiping her the right way? How am I doing it? I know I can be a bit dyslexic at times but could I have vaginalexia? Yes that is totally a word now-lol!

So could I totally be causing my daughter’s UTI by wiping her the wrong way? I know it’s not hard to know what is front to back but I think I really need to take the blame on this one and blame it on the potty training “I do it”.  It’s killing me knowing I’m the one putting her through so much discomfort. I do feel better that she responds quickly to the antibiotics and even as of last night she was feeling much better.

Here are some symptoms to look out for. My daughter had all the symptoms below other than fever:
  • pain, burning, or a stinging sensation when peeing
  • an increased urge to urinate or frequent urination (though only a very small amount of urine may be produced)
  • fever (though this is not always present)
  • frequent night waking to go to the bathroom
  • wetting problems, even though the child is toilet taught
  • low back pain or abdominal pain in the area of the bladder (generally below the navel)
  • foul-smelling urine that may look cloudy or contain blood
You can bet that I will be paying better attention when we go potty.

Will We EVER Be Potty Trained?

potty training in progressSo it’s been a few months since my last potty training post. Buggy has done super awesome with going pee on the potty and as most kids do, she picked it up right away but we are still having issues with going poo. The kid absolutely refuses to poo in the potty. We’ve done stickers, snacks, the poo happy dance on the few times she has gone but no dice on consistency with going poo in the potty and sometimes there is nothing at all you can use to bribe this kid with-NOTHING!

I know it takes longer to master this part but she is almost 3.5 and I’m just wondering how.much.longer. The poor kid has had issues with her little who-ha being sore because she’s tried to wipe herself, she’s had a UTI and we are now just starting to feel better on that. She’s been wearing her big girl underwear for months and has no problem going poo in them and she will tell me when she does it and we go right to the big potty so I guess that’s a step in the right direction.

I know that it will take time and she will come around when she’s ready but sometimes it does feel like we’ll never get there so I just need to be patient, Hakuna Matata right but not always so easy when you’re washing poop out of underwear quite a few times a day.

Adventures In Potty Training: Peek-A-Boo Poo-Poo

We have been in full blown potty training for the last month and let me tell you, it’s a dirty job! Buggy is doing great with going pee in the potty and when we started she only had two accidents but I can’t say the same for poo’ing in the potty. She loves her potty and will go pee even when she’s wearing her diaper. She pulls it off and tells me she has to go potty and then we put on her big girl underwear. They say that going poo in the potty takes longer- yup, it certainly does. Let me tell ya, I think I would rather change dirty diapers.

Buggy went poo in the potty at school a few weeks ago and she was so excited when she did it. When I picked her up that day she couldn’t wait to tell me and we did our excited potty dance and I told her how proud I was of her.  She is still not going poo in the potty even when she is wearing her big girl underwear. She doesn’t wear a diaper unless we go out running errands or at night time. When we are at home it’s all big girl underwear but the other day after cleaning up five poopy big girl underwear I caved and put a diaper on her so that she can go. By then my hands felt like sand paper from washing them so much. Once she went I was good for a few days until her poo cycle started again.

It has always been difficult to change Buggy’s diaper when she went poo because the kid tightens her legs and I have to pry them open to clean her up and that just makes it worse for her because I have to really dig in to get everything and then she’s sore. It really breaks my heart but I think I finally came up with a way to get her to let me wipe her - because we all know how much they want to do it themselves. Introducing Peek-A-Boo Poo Poo. After she pee’s I try and have her bend over to see if there is any poo hiding in her bum. I tell her I think that poo poo is playing peek-a-boo and I have to do more wiping. I say poo poo where are you and totally make a game out of it. That relaxes her and gets her laughing and I’m able to really get in there and then I throw her in the tubby for a good soak. Her nightly bath has been helping quit a bit since she’s been so sore.

I can’t wait until she’s mastered the poo. I know it hurts her to go but tonight she did pretty good. I’ve got sticker charts every where and her reward was a cookie.

Potty Training

pottytraining

We started potty training sometime last spring. Buggy would freak out every time she poo’d in her diaper so I thought maybe that is a sign that she is ready for the potty. At first Buggy wouldn’t go near the potty. I’ve read where potty training a two year old may be way too young and you should start more at around 3 so you don’t have any setbacks. I guess that would also depend on the child.

I left the potty in the bathroom and let Buggy get familiar with it. Since you can’t always go potty with a toddler around Buggy would see me sitting on my potty and I would tell her that her potty was on the floor. Eventually she came around and started sitting on it with her clothes on. For a while there it seemed like her favorite place to poo was when she was in the tub. As soon as I see her trying to go I would pull her out and put her on her potty. She didn’t like it and would freak but I just kept telling her she had to go poo-poo in the potty. Since she was wet from being in the tubby I would grab the towels and put them around her and that was the magic moment.

Buggy now loves her potty. Somehow having the towels around her is the coolest thing for her and a must when she sits on her potty. She has gone a few times in there and we do our potty dance but for the most part she will just sit in there and maybe a dribble or two comes out.  Just the other day she was in the tubby and it looked like she was trying to go and I told her no poo-poo in the tubby and she pointed to her potty so she can do her business. She’s too cute. She’ll even grab some toilet paper and wipe herself – even when she doesn’t do anything.

When did you start potty training your little one?
