What Happened To My Christmas Tree Smell?

Growing up my family always had a fake tree. After Thanksgiving we go down to the basement and bring up that box and put the tree together. You finagle with the branches to get them just right, add the ornaments, the garland - the horrendous looking garland, and of course you can't forget about the tinsel.

When I got my own place I totally insisted on having a real tree. There is nothing better than the smell of the tree when you walk into the house - I love it.  Hubby and I always research the greatest smelling trees to make sure that we are getting the right one and for the most part we always get the same kind every year. But the last few years our trees haven't had that Christmas tree smell. They smell amazing at the tree lot and the attendants all say the same shit crap "your whole house is going to smell amazing" blah blah blah! What a crock I tell ya!

Ok so we bring our tree home and guess what - nada, zilch, nothing. We are totally disappointed. We went up to the farm to get this tree. They are not cheap! It looks beautiful but no smell. A few days go by and I convince hubby to get another tree.  Since we redid our front porch and extended the deck on it I suggested we put the tree out front. Hubs was totally on board so he does the research again and off we go.

IMG_6889We walk up and down the tree isles on the lot and boy it smells so darn good, me very happy. I can't get enough of the way the trees smell so we think yea any one of these trees will do. We picked a really pretty tree, although its so hard to tell when the branches haven't fallen yet, but on the roof it goes. We get home and our tree smells good but not like at the lot. We stick our faces right in the branches, like they could pick your nose we were in there so close, and yea it smelled good so we think OK we did good. I could even smell it a bit up stairs. It's been a few days now and guess what-I'm not smelling jack!  I'm so disappointed. I like to keep our tree up until Little New Year's but with it not smelling I don't know if I really want to.

I’ve been like a big whiny brat the last few days. I want my Christmas Tree smell! But there is nothing I can do about that now. I guess I will be heading to Yankee Candle tomorrow and get my Balsam & Cedar candle so I can at least pretend that my tree is giving off the wonderful Christmas Tree smell.

Do you love the tree smell as much as I do? What candles do you burn during the holidays?

  1. I have no advice whatsoever but I do love the smell of a real Christmas tree. I have always wanted one for the house but they drive Mike's allergies nutso.

I like to burn a Creme Brulee candle during the holidays. Oh my goodness the whole house smells so yummy.

  2. Hi Felicia,

I've never smelled the Creme Brulee candle. Will have to check it out. I love burning candles. I'm allergic to everything just about but the trees don't seem to bother me. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. I really love the smell of christmas tree. I'm finally done with the decor and my kids are so happy about that. I always go for a candle with vanilla flavor. I'm a big fan of vanilla fragrance. Thanks for stopping by and i hope you have a great week..

  6. We have a real tree this year and I haven't smelled it once yet. My husband says he can smell it but I can't. Something must be wrong with my nose right now. But I agree with you on this because a long time ago I bought a real tree and my oh my, it smelled strong and wonderful. Something has changed over the years.

  8. You know what . I was saying the same thing!! Truth be told there is no smell. Maybe for an hour then nothing! I think the smell when your picking the trees comes from the crunching of the pine needles walking on them. lots of things have changed taste of food, drinks, and now our trees!

  9. They say that if your tree isn't hydrated enough, it is not getting enough water and will not have that pine smell you desire. At the tree lots you smell cut trees and pine needles. I have had mine for 4 days and it's just now starting to smell good. We cut 2 inches off the base when we brought it home so it would drink water. If you wait too long to put it in water after the trunk is cut, it seals itself and it will not drink water. Try drilling a few holes well below the water line and see if that helps any. Do not use corn syrup or aspirin in the water, these are fake solutions. Just make sure it's got plenty of fresh water!! Trees tend to drink a LOT of water the first couple of days too. So make sure you check it every day! Like I said, mine drank a LOT the first few days and now I can sit in the front room and I'm starting to smell the pine. Also make sure there's no fan or heater on or near it. This can also affect the smell!
