Finally Saying Goodbye To 2011

I say good riddance to 2011! This year totally sucked ass! I’m so glad that it is just about over – just a few hours left. There was so much sadness, I shed way too many tears and dealt with so much family drama bullshit-on both sides. I really hate drama. I’m more of a laid back person and like to go with the flow. I prefer humor with a screw you attitude.  I don’t like to  drama – did I mention that already!

Earlier this year I also dropped a few bitches who I thought were friends. Friends who I was always there for, listening to their complaints about family, husbands, friends, their own family gossip and what not. Hung out after class and had drinks with, studied together, supported each other, listened to stories about the cheating husband, breast cancer, single mom –looser ex-husband, blah blah blah. Yet these bitches weren’t there for me when I needed a shoulder to lean on, someone to talk to, vent with, to tell me no I’m not crazy or say hell yea bitch you is crazy! But that’s ok, I’m strong, I survived but y’all can SUCK IT!  That’s your loss. I’d rather be lonely than deal with fake and phony. I don’t do well with fake and phony.

The worst part of this year was when my dog died. Tasha was the best little Westie dog ever. She was my shadow, my little side kick. I became a mommy when I got her. She was my baby when I struggled to have a real one. She licked away my tears, offered her shoulder when I needed one and gave me her paw to let me know that she was there for me. I miss my baby girl so much. This was the first Christmas in 14 years I didn’t have her by my side. She was the only dog that slept in bed with me. I miss my furry best friend and it fricken sucks. Pebbles, one of my boxers isn’t doing well and just found out that my other Westie- Allie is pretty much blind and is now diabetic. I gave her the first insulin shot this morning. So far Chantal is doing great. These dogs were my first babies. They are mama’s girls.

2012 will have good things in store for me and I say that because for me the glass is always half full. I have health, my family and lots of humor but most of all I have you guys. I love blogging and always feel so much better when I put it out there – it’s therapy and you guys are totally awesome!

So from me to you:

It Sucks When Your Furbabies Get Old

Look how amazing my little Allie looks. She certainly doesn’t look like she is 13.5 does she.

Allie was my problem child. When I brought her home at 8 weeks I seriously thought she was the puppy from hell. She had to have the last word, she was always the instigator and the one that got the others all riled up. I can’t even count how many times I threatened her that I was going to take her back to the kennel. She would look at me as if to say “go ahead, I dare you” and she knew I could never.

My little Allie-Cat was never the lovable, cuddly social butterfly that my Tasha was. Allie is more independent and hands out with you when she wants to, she let you pet her when she wants you to - everything is always on her terms. As Allie got older she mellowed out –some, but she was still the feisty little Westie.

Since we lost Tasha in October Allie has not been the same. She started behaving like Tasha – drinking a lot, having accidents, sleeping all the time and turning into a food whore. It was like Invasion Of The Body Snatchers-Allie became Tasha. It was super freaky. Today I took my Allie-Cat to the vet. I brought them a urine sample thinking maybe she has a UTI. My biggest fear was that she had Cancer or Cushions Disease like Tasha did. I did not want to go through that again with my baby.

As soon as my vet saw her urine she said it looks like Diabetes but she ran the test and took some blood work. She said her level was really high but waiting for the results. She also gave me antibiotics for precaution just in case it is a UTI. Allie has really bad cataracts and she is pretty much blind. All this is new to us. When Tasha was with us, she was fine and never showed any signs of any of this stuff. I asked my vet why? Why now? Coincidence? I don’t believe in coincidences. She said that Allie may have been experiencing these issues – she was always a hoarder with her water – but with the stress of loosing Tasha everything just came full tilt. See, Tasha was Allie’s shadow, her safety blanket. They were always together. They were a year apart-no relation. Never separated unless one of them had to go to the vets. Tasha was strong and didn’t take any crap from any dog – no matter what size. Allie was tough when she had backup-LOL!

So hopefully I’ll find out  tomorrow if it really is diabetes. She is going to have to start her insulin and I really hate needles but having gone through IVF and giving myself all those shots, I guess I should be used to it but you do what you need to do for your babies no matter how much you hate it. Allie is pretty much blind, pretty much deaf but she doesn’t have Cancer and for that I’m extremely thankful. I cannot loose another baby so soon.

Wordless Wednesday: Christmas

I hope everyone had a great holiday. Here are a few family pictures from Christmas. As you can see she loved her horse “Lucky”.

Memories Of A Puerto Rican Christmas

I have so many wonderful childhood Christmas memories. For me, Navidad (Christmas) is the best of all the Puerto Rican cultures. It is an amazing celebration. You have Christmas Eve (Nochebuena), Christmas Day (Navidad) and New Years Eve (Despedida de Ano). We also celebrate Little New Years (El Dia De Los Reyes). This is especially big for kids. We always keep our tree up until Little New Years. That is generally too long for my husband but I love it and I hope Buggy will come to enjoy it as well.  My mother was one of eight which means I have a lot of cousins. It was great because we all grew up together. We had so much fun. You always had someone to play with and it was even better during the holidays.

My greatest memories are of the “parranda’s”. A parranda is when a small group of friends gather together to surprise another friend. It's the Puerto Rican version of Christmas caroling. Most parranderos play some sort of instrument, either guitarras (guitars), tamboriles (tamborines), maracas, or any other type of instrument and they all sing. Generally they were the people from our church choir.

The parrandas generally start late. I can’t remember what time but I remember that we were already in bed so they must have been after 8. We would hear the singing and the instruments and my sisters and I would get really excited because we knew what that meant-party time! When a parranda shows up at your house, you open the door and let them in. I remember my Mami making hot chocolate, CafĂ© con leche (coffee with milk), coquito (eggnog), bread, crackers, cheese, etc. There was a lot of singing and fun. When they were getting ready to leave Mami would tell us to get dressed because we would be joining the group and heading off to the next house and that meant a very late night for us. It was always such a great time for us. No matter how late we got home or how tired we were, there was no complaining. We couldn’t wait to do it again.

What are you favorite childhood Christmas memories?

No Cake For Breakfast

Yesterday I took Buggy for her 24 month check up. I still can’t believe my baby is two years old. How time certainly flies. I have loved every single stage and I really miss the baby stage but this is a fun stage for us. Buggy is hilarious. We are both so silly and she has me cracking up all day. I want to spend every single minute with her.

The toughest time I am having with my little Buggs is her eating habits. They are horrible and as much as I try I just cannot get this little Bugger to eat her veggies. If she doesn’t want something she will put it on the side of her tray. Colored food is just about out of the question. She loves chicken nuggets but refuses to eat any piece of chicken. Seems like we are living on hot dogs, pizza and spaghetti these days. She should be eating what we eat but so not the case. There are some healthy foods that she eats but it depends on her mood. I’m happy that she loves fruit and her dairy although she refuses to drink milk but since she’s still nursing, I’m fine with that. Dinner is such a struggle with her at times.

Buggy does like her junk food. She loves her ice cream and tries to get it as much as she can even for breakfast. I think she is taking after her daddy who loves everything sweet which is what I’m afraid of. That is why I refuse to give her juice although she did have some on her birthday. Daddy has been hounding me so to get him off my back I let her have some and she didn’t care for it. She reached for her water instead and I was so happy. There will be plenty of time for her to have juice so for now I want to plant the seed for healthy things. Daddy’s idea of breakfast is anything but breakfast but generally he will have a Fiber One bar or something like that. I am constantly on his case about eating healthy in front of her. She is in the absorption stage right now and when she see’s him eating crap then that’s what she wants to eat. Last month I caught her eating a peanut butter cup because she saw daddy eating one that morning, how she got the wrapper open is beyond me.

So when Buggy and I were at the doctors office I was mentioning to her doctor the difficult time I am having with her eating habits and told him what a bad influence daddy can be – yes daddy I went there – although he said that he didn’t like to take sides, Dr.L said he agrees with me. He mentioned diabetes in young kids, obesity, etc and jokingly I said I wish I could have recorded him saying that or maybe he could write me a note.  Before he left I saw him writing a script and I thought it was for vitamins. Check out what he wrote – I loved it!

Happy Birthday Buggy

Two years ago today, December 19, at 7.06AM I received the best Christmas present ever, one that I had been waiting more than 5 years for – the birth of my baby!IMG_3569  Here we are two years later. How time flies! I still can’t believe Buggy is two! I still miss those baby years but so looking forward to all things to come and create so many more memories.

IMG_6971

IMG_6908To my amazing, happy, silly beautiful little girl. You are my biggest blessing and the best thing that has ever happened to me. I am honored to be your Mother. Not a day goes by that I don’t thank God for you. He knew I had always wanted a little girl and after struggling for so long to have a baby my prayers were finally answered. Te quiero mucho mi Angelita. (I love you so much my little Angel).

I had the worst pregnancy. I was nauseas and throwing up until 25 weeks. I had absolutely no desire to eat whatsoever but I had to eat every 3 hours so I wouldn’t get sick, the lousy catch 22. I had to eat full hot meals. Everyone used to tell me to eat crackers or protein bars or a snack here but not me, I needed real food but food was my enemy. The only time I didn’t feel sick was when I was asleep.

For nine months I ate eggs and pancakes for breakfast and I remember sitting at my kitchen island trying to swallow my food and in tears because I didn’t want to eat. I would beg my doctor to give me an IV so that I wouldn’t have to put food in my mouth. The worst part was having to throw up at work. People could hear me throwing up if they walked by the bathroom. If someone was in the bathroom and I was puking my brains out they knew who was in there. After work I would grab any kind of fast food and call my husband on the way home and tell him to start dinner and have to eat again – God it was horrible! But as long as I was eating I guess Buggy was good – that’s all that mattered – the little bugger!

I was HUGE, I weighed 200lbs at the end of my pregnancy and I was swollen like you wouldn’t believe. My legs and feet were the size of tree trunks. I could barely walk and when I did I dragged my feet as if they had weights on them. Towards the end I got pre-eclampsia and after weeks of begging to get this baby out, my doctor finally agreed to induce me on my due date – if I didn’t go into labor. Can I tell you that I had the best best doctor in the world – and he was a hotty too!  I don’t get how you spend nine months of your pregnancy seeing your doctor and then when you give birth they may not be the one delivering your baby. Well that wasn’t gonna happen with me. I kept telling Dr. Quaas that I he had to be there to deliver Buggy or we would have to induce. I didn’t want a stranger delivering my baby girl. I told him I would work around his vacation seeing as it was almost Christmas and all, but he better be there. I planted this seed in his head months and months earlier so he had fair warning.

December 18 was my due date and that morning we were going into the hospital to be induced. At 5.45A I started to feel the drop and I knew I was going into labor but I went back to bed for a couple more hours. Hey on TV they tell you not to come in unless the contractions are minutes apart so I figured I had plenty of time and my appointment wasn’t until 11 anyway. When I got up again I told hubby what was happening and he went into panic mode. “Did you call the doctor? We should go to the hospital he kept insisting”. Nah we got plenty of time I say. I need to make sure that my furbabies are taken care of first. Did I mention that it was about 45 min -1 hour ride to get to Boston to Mass General Hospital, depending on traffic. S’all good though. And then on the way there the contractions started really coming and dang they really hurt. I have a very low threshold to pain but I was holding my own, being a trooper. I think baby daddy was afraid my water would break and I’d spew that stuff all over the place.

Once at the hospital I check in and after a quick exam they send me up to L&D. I was 1 centimeter dilated. That was the beginning of a long night. I had to wait quite a while to get my epidural because I was on a Heparin, a blood thinner and they had to wait for the blood test to come back so they gave me a local in the meantime. Given the chance to do over I would definitely have skipped the local. I was so out of it and totally woozy that I was not able to hold Buggy when she was born. I have to admit that when I finally got the epidural I was so happy and really happy when they gave me the self inject button but I was a bit disappointed that I could still feel stuff. Everyone used to say get the Epi cuz you won’t feel a thing. Umm, yea I did. Towards the end I kept arguing with them that I could still feel the pain and sometime in the middle of the night they brought someone up and adjusted the damn thing. It was good but come to find out what you are really feeling is pressure from the baby moving down the canal. Hmmm, still painful. It took FOREVER to get fully dilated even with the Pitocin.  Because of the T.I.A-mini stroke I had a few years prior, I had an amazing team on standby during my delivery. At one time we had a little scare when my blood pressure dropped and about 8 people ran into the room to check on me.

Dr. Hottie came in a few times to check on me because he was doing a delivery a few doors down but mentioned that he was off around 6AM. I think he took advantage cuz I was somewhat out of it with the local and couldn’t argue with him. Finally around 6:15AM one of the doctors come in to check on me and said I was finally dilated and they are going to break my water. I had heard about those knitting needles and was freaking out but then I remembered me not gonna feel anything because my buddy Epidural was there for me. Thank goodness I had started watching 16 And Pregnant because I was totally prepared for all this – Thank you MTV! (dripping sarcasm).

When it was time to push Dr. Hottie – umm I mean Dr. Quaas came in and I was so excited to see him. He told me that he just finished with his previous delivery and wanted to stay and deliver Buggy. See I told you he was amazing! I was so happy and hellooooo Dr. Hottie -  ok I was too groggy, yea that wouldn’t have worked! Ummm, don’t worry baby daddy, I was under heavy medication, I did not know what I was thinking!  Ok, so anyway, I push about 3 times and 35 minutes later out pops my little Angel. Unfortunately, baby daddy couldn’t cut the cord. They had to take Buggy away immediately because she had pooped while she was still inside me. It’s called Meconium. It is a greenish-black color and very sticky, tarry in its texture.  If a baby passes it after birth there is no danger to it and it just naturally leaves the baby's body in the first few days after birth but it can pose real danger when it is passed in utero.

There were so many people in the room. All my teams were were amazing - IVF, Hematology and Pediatricians. I cannot say enough about the care that we received at Mass General. Dr. Quaas is now training in Reproductive Endocrinology & IVF in California.

Here are some pics from her party. She had an amazing time! The kids all loved it. Happy  Birthday Buggy Boo. Thank you for making me laugh, thank you for the happy tears and thank you for making me the happiest, silliest Mami. I love You So Much!  Daddy and I are so happy you had a wonderful day.

What Happened To My Christmas Tree Smell?

Growing up my family always had a fake tree. After Thanksgiving we go down to the basement and bring up that box and put the tree together. You finagle with the branches to get them just right, add the ornaments, the garland - the horrendous looking garland, and of course you can't forget about the tinsel.

When I got my own place I totally insisted on having a real tree. There is nothing better than the smell of the tree when you walk into the house - I love it.  Hubby and I always research the greatest smelling trees to make sure that we are getting the right one and for the most part we always get the same kind every year. But the last few years our trees haven't had that Christmas tree smell. They smell amazing at the tree lot and the attendants all say the same shit crap "your whole house is going to smell amazing" blah blah blah! What a crock I tell ya!

Ok so we bring our tree home and guess what - nada, zilch, nothing. We are totally disappointed. We went up to the farm to get this tree. They are not cheap! It looks beautiful but no smell. A few days go by and I convince hubby to get another tree.  Since we redid our front porch and extended the deck on it I suggested we put the tree out front. Hubs was totally on board so he does the research again and off we go.

IMG_6889We walk up and down the tree isles on the lot and boy it smells so darn good, me very happy. I can't get enough of the way the trees smell so we think yea any one of these trees will do. We picked a really pretty tree, although its so hard to tell when the branches haven't fallen yet, but on the roof it goes. We get home and our tree smells good but not like at the lot. We stick our faces right in the branches, like they could pick your nose we were in there so close, and yea it smelled good so we think OK we did good. I could even smell it a bit up stairs. It's been a few days now and guess what-I'm not smelling jack!  I'm so disappointed. I like to keep our tree up until Little New Year's but with it not smelling I don't know if I really want to.

I’ve been like a big whiny brat the last few days. I want my Christmas Tree smell! But there is nothing I can do about that now. I guess I will be heading to Yankee Candle tomorrow and get my Balsam & Cedar candle so I can at least pretend that my tree is giving off the wonderful Christmas Tree smell.

Do you love the tree smell as much as I do? What candles do you burn during the holidays?

Asparagus And Cheddar Stuffed Chicken Breast

This is an amazing and simple recipe to do. I actually saw this at the store and thought it looked delicious. Once I got home and prepared to put it in the oven I realized I could totally do this myself. My picture doesn’t look as appetizing but trust me, it was good.

So last night I made it myself and like I said-amazing and simple. I love Asparagus and just about any baked stuffed chicken.

Ingredients
4 chicken breasts
12 trimmed asparagus spears
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, divided or use Cheddar single slices
lemon pepper seasoning – or any type you prefer

Directions
Preheat oven to 350°F. If you prefer, you can pound chicken breasts with a meat mallet to flatten but I just left them as they were. Depending on the size of your chicken breast, place 2-3 trimmed asparagus spears in the center of each breast and top each with Cheddar cheese. Bring in sides of chicken and tie using a toothpick. Season to taste with lemon pepper seasoning and place in a baking dish. Add 1/4-inch of water to dish; cover and cook for 20 minutes. Remove cover and cook for 20 minutes or until chicken is cooked through. Serve with your favorite side dish!

Makes 4 servings.

Early Morning Sunrise

Taking pictures has always been a hobby for me. I am completely and utterly trigger happy. My camera is always on standby. I don’t think I have a preference of what I take pictures of, I just love to capture the moment. My dogs are used to me posing them and taking pictures of them. Every year for their birthday I bake them cupcakes and put birthday hats on them – basically torture them, but they are totally used to it. They sit very still and give me the look – lady hurry up and take your damn picture – I want my cupcake!  Buggy is also used to me taking pictures of her as well. She will take my camera and walk around pretending to take pictures of the dogs. It’s hilarious to see.

I use a digital Canon Rebel EOS and I love it. I’ve had it a few years now and I’ve yet to really know how to use this camera to its full potential. I would love to take a photography class to learn more. I guess I could go back and read the manual but I like applying what I am learning in real time. I am constantly changing the settings and profiles when I take my pictures which really screws me up because when I go back and look at them I don’t remember which setting I used. But I love my camera. I also have the same one but for film which hasn’t been used in quite some time but I think I’m going to hold on to it.

Aside from my daughter and my dogs, I love taking pictures of the sunrise and sunset. When I take my dog for a walk I try and remember to take my camera with me so I can capture the amazing colors displayed across the sky. It’s usually difficult to get a clear shot without trees in the way because I’m at a low level. My husband keeps telling me to drive up to  the golf course to get my shots so I’ll have to remember that next time.

A few days ago Buggy got up around 5:45AM and before I went to get her I let the dogs out. As I looked out I noticed the sun was starting to peak so I ran to get my camera. It was capture the moment or grab your crying toddler – sorry Buggy, Mami had to capture the moment but I didn’t let you cry for too long.

These shots were taken from my deck outside my bedroom. I had to lean over the edge on a few of them to get a clear shot – just look how gorgeous!

When you see a gorgeous sunrise like this, you will most certainly see a beautiful sunset and on days like this I am usually Chasing The Sunset.
